Drawing a puppy head

This is a quick little tutorial to give you some pointers when it comes to drawing a basic cartoon puppy head!

Step 1
Begin with a circle for the head and an oval for the muzzle. Cartoon pups usually have rather short muzzles, large heads and eyes, and cute ears. This pup isn't of any special breed, so I don't have to think about how long/short the muzzle should be etc.

Step 2

Next, it's time to work more on the nose. Here I've added it, as well as a few mouthlines. Notice the little chin? You can also see the helplines for the eyes.

Step 3

Eyes and eyebrows! Notice that this little pup has two highlights in the eye? This makes it look smaller and cuter. Humans tend to like animals with large heads, big eyes and small bodies, because they remind us of human babies.
I have also added small eyebrows to this pic. Notice how little you can see of the left eye and eyebrow!

Step 4
The last big step! Now add the ears. Ears aren't thin and flat - they are sort of wrinkled, like shown above. Try to at least hint a little 3D in the ears, that will help your pup look more realistic.

Step 5

Finally, if you want, you can add a few last details, and perhaps give your puppy some colour. I made a black/white little foxhound :)
